Director of Research

Basic Function
Datalys Center for Sports Injury Research and Prevention is seeking a qualified individual for the position of Director of Research with a diverse skill set drawn from significant research and sports medicine experience. This position is a senior leadership position within Datalys Center and entails a challenging array of roles and responsibilities. The full-time Director of Research position will oversee and manage all surveillance, research, analysis and health policy activities conducted at Datalys Center. The position also includes a time allocation for the candidate to pursue his or her own sports medicine research interests through a joint appointment at the Indiana University School of Medicine.
Duties and Responsibilities
  1. The Director of Research will have responsibility for the successful execution of each sponsored research initiative undertaken by Datalys Center.
  2. Datalys Center is still in its early stages, and thus, a near-term priority will be a systematic review of NCAA’s existing injury surveillance data requirements, tools, processes and collection strategies.
  3. The Director of Research will work closely with external stakeholders and/or research sponsors to guide them through an evaluation of their needs and the development of optimal approaches and strategies for achieving the sponsors’ objectives. As such, the Director of Research will play a formative role in each sponsored research initiative and in so doing will play a formative role in the evolution and maturation of Datalys Center itself.
  4. The Director of Research will work closely with Datalys Center’s information technology and data management resources to design, implement, and manage the data collection process, the data collection sites, and collection tools required to achieve the sponsors’ objectives.
  5. The Director of Research will be responsible for representing the Center on matters related to data collection, application, and policy development with external parties. As such, the Director of Research will be an important voice for Datalys Center and have an important role in establishing, maintaining, and advancing the Center as a premier research provider in the field of sports medicine and public health.
Minimum Requirements
  1. The successful candidate will have a terminal degree in their field (e.g., Ph.D., M.D., etc.), and an established record of publication demonstrating excellence in research commensurate with his or her career stage.
  2. The successful candidate will demonstrate operational experience in the areas of project management, personnel management, and vendor management.
  3. The successful candidate will have strong intellectual, management, and inter-personal skills.
  4. The successful candidate will demonstrate an ability to communicate effectively in a variety of public settings. This will entail exemplary oral and written communication skills as well as the ability to express complex concepts in a clear and concise manner.
Preferred Qualifications
In addition, preferred candidates will have:
  1. A strong record of research achievement from high caliber educational institutions
  2. Formal training as an epidemiologist with a background in biostatistics and/or sports medicine
  3. Post-doctoral experience in a related area
  4. An understanding of the U.S. Sports Medicine market including treatment management systems and vendors
  5. Familiarity with HIPAA privacy and security standards
  6. Direct experience or familiarity with the athletic training room, with a deep understanding of the role and function of the athletic trainer and supporting physician(s)
  7. Senior-level management experience in a business, academic or entrepreneurial non-profit setting, where they will have shown success as a strategic planner, leader, and manager
  8. Effectively managed multi-party collaborations and/or cross-organizational teams

Datalys Center is a newly formed 501(c)(3) non-profit organization based in Indianapolis, Indiana. The company was founded through collaboration between the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), the American College of Sports Medicine, and BioCrossroads and is led by a coalition of the nation’s premier sports medicine organizations including the National Athletic Trainers’ Association and the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine.
